Intro to WCAG by Example

Session Summary:

Are you new to accessibility and want to understand what the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are all about? It is hard to understand the implications of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) if you don’t understand how people with disabilities use the web. This session will explain WCAG by example. It will demonstrate how the WCAG requirements can enable people of all abilities to fully interact with the Web.

Description:

This session will use real world examples to explain the level A and AA success criteria in WCAG 2.0. There will be recorded examples of a screen reader announcing images without alternative text to demonstrate the implications. I will show why proper headings are important, the necessity for captions and subtitles on videos, how color contrast affects people. Basically I will go through the level A and AA success criteria and provide examples for each. Attendees will see/hear/understand how users are affected when you don’t have image descriptions, or your site doesn’t work with a keyboard, etc. Since this is an intro session, I won’t cover WCAG 2.1 but will direct people to the WCAG 2.1 session for that. My goal is to make this a 1.5-hour session. I’m not sure I can cover all 38 (25 A and 13 AA) Success criteria in that time. This might need to be two sessions.
